Site: TBD July 7, 2007
Though nothing has been officially announced yet, Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi is one of the contenders for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. Two other possibilities include Salzburg, Austria and Pyeong Chang, South Korea. Sochi bid for both the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics but lost mostly because of the poor quality of its Soviet-era infrastructure. The Russian government has agreed to allocate $7.01 billion for Sochi if it wins the bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The winning city will be announced in July 7, 2007 in Guatemala City. Sochi’s bid to host the 2014 Olympics and Paralympics is a bid from a country with great accomplishments in the area of winter sports that has never had the honor of hosting the winter Olympics bestowed upon it.
The Russian government adopted a $12 billion federal program with the purpose of developing Sochi as a mountain resort until 2014. Under the program, modern infrastructure will be created such as a large international sports complex, a central stadium, a bobsled run (the only one in Russia), and a hockey stadium. The plans also include the grouping of eleven sporting facilities into two complexes with seating of up to 200,000.
In light of the bid for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, construction has already begun in the way of new hotels and alpine skiing slopes at Krasnaya Polyana, which is the center of the Russian town’s Olympic bid. Krasnaya Polyana is one of the favorite spots of President Vladimir Putin as well as Gelendzhik where 170 new hotels are currently being built. Until the announcement is made next summer, we will not know officially who will be the host for 2014’s Winter Olympics, and until we have the official word, not much is known regarding tickets, events, or even dates. All bidders are equally optimistic about their chances, so we will have to wait until the official word has been released.
