Vancouver was chosen to host the XXI 2010 Winter Olympics. This will be the first time the winter games will be held in a large metropolitan city since most previous games were held in smaller resort towns such as Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. Vancouver has a population of 2,000,00 people and is located at sea level surrounded by mountains that include three ski hills. Since this is the first game to be held at sea level, the name "The Sea to Sky Games" has been chosen. The dates chosen for the events are February 12-28, 2010 for the Olympic Winter Games and March 12-21, 2010 for the Paralympic Winter Games. Another difference with the Vancouver games is that for the first time the opening and closing ceremonies will be held indoors.
The events will be divided between Vancouver and Whistler. Events to be held in Vancouver include freestyle, snowboarding and all the ice sports, hockey, figure skating, curling, speed skating, and short track speed skating. In Whistler will host alpine skiing, Nordic sports (cross country skiing, ski jumping, and biathlon), sliding sports (bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton) and paralympic sports.
Tickets will go on sale 12-18 months prior to the commencement of the games. A combined total of 1.8 million tickets will be available for the various sporting events with another 900,000 available for the opening and closing ceremonies, festivals, and presentation of medals. In addition, 50,000 tickets will be available for distraction to the under-privileged, 470,00 at a cost under $50 CAD, and 530,000 tickets under $100 CAD.
The cost of the games is estimated to be $1.3 billion. Revenues from television are expected to provide $670 million, a figure that is 67% higher than was originally expected and budgeted. Broadcasting will provide 50% of revenues, corporate sponsorship 40%, ticket sales 8%, and licensing 2%.
